A European recognition for commitment to the fibre ecosystem

Icíar Martínez Núñez recognised by the FTTH Council Europe for her contribution to the European fibre ecosystem

The 2026 Spring General Assembly of the FTTH Council Europe, held in Brussels, brought especially relevant news for Onivia: Icíar Martínez Núñez, Governance & Corporate Communications Director at Onivia, has been recognised with the Member Engagement Individual Award.

This award recognises her commitment and active contribution to the FTTH Council Europe’s initiatives over the past year, highlighting a way of participating based on collaboration, consistency and the ability to bring value to shared spaces within the sector.

For Onivia, this recognition carries a double meaning. On the one hand, it acknowledges Icíar’s work and involvement in one of Europe’s leading fibre organisations. On the other, it reinforces Onivia’s presence in forums where the future of connectivity in Europe is discussed, analysed and advanced.

Fibre: much more than deployment

This recognition comes at a key moment for the sector. According to the European FTTH/B Market Panorama 2026 by the FTTH Council Europe, FTTH/B networks now pass approximately 295 million homes in EU39, reaching close to 79% coverage. However, the average take-up rate stands at around 54%.

This figure reflects an interesting reality: Europe has made significant progress in fibre deployment, but the next major challenge is to activate that infrastructure, drive adoption and turn available connectivity into real value for homes, businesses and territories.

In this context, participating in spaces such as the FTTH Council Europe enables Onivia to stay close to the sector’s key conversations and contribute to a more open, competitive and collaborative vision for fibre.

A recognition that also speaks about Onivia

The Member Engagement Individual Award received by Icíar highlights the role of the people who represent Onivia beyond the company, bringing knowledge, perspective and commitment to European collaborative environments.

The General Assembly also marked a new stage for the FTTH Council Europe, with the renewal of its leadership and the evolution of its committees to address new priorities within the connectivity ecosystem, such as data centres, investment, ESG, regulation, open access and deployment.

For Onivia, being present in these spaces is a way to keep connecting where it matters: not only through infrastructure, but also by taking part in the conversations that help define the future of the sector.

Congratulations, Icíar, on this recognition and for representing Onivia’s commitment to a more open, collaborative connectivity model, ready to meet the new digital challenges ahead.
